In Homepathy we talk most about the Organon of Medicine, but do you wonder from where it came? The word ‘Organon‘ is a Greek derivation of the word ‘organum‘ which has multiple meanings like literary work, the method of scientific investigation or an instrument of thought or system of logic. Richard Hughes explains that “the organon as an instrument for affecting in the best manner a certain end”
Now let’s get into the history of the word organon, this word was first used by the Greek philosopher Aristotle in his treatises on logic, which was summed up under the common title ‘Organon’. Moreover, Lord Francis Bacon wrote a book on logic in Latin named “Novum Organum” which is the second volume of “Instauratio Magna”. It is believed that it influenced the master to name his book as Organon.
As you know Organ of Medicine is a basic book written by Master Samuel Hahnemann himself containing the principle of Homeopathy along with the critical analysis of all other modes of treatment present at his time. The main aim of writing this book was to present the medical professional, with merits and practical instruction to practice Homeopathy in a logical and elaborative way not only that he also criticizes other prevailing systems of medicine for their harsh and cruel way of treatment and establishes the superiority of homeopathy.
The original title of the first edition of the book was ‘Organon Der Rationellen Heilkunde’ which means ‘Organon of Rational Medicines Science’ but he got great criticism for using the word ‘Rationellen’, so from the second edition onwards to the fifth one the title was changed to ‘Organon der Heilkunst’ which means ‘Organon of the Healing Art’
Then you must wonder, from where did the Organon of Medicine drop, actually it was again R. Huges who gave the title ‘Organon of Medicine’ to the 6th edition. During the lifespan of Master Hahnemann, he published five editions of the organon, the 5th one is quite more popular among homoeopaths and the 6 one was the most controversial one, because it was published after the death of Master. No matter how much we criticise the 6th edition, but the title of the 6th edition was accepted by all homoeopaths as the common name for this branch.
Now let’s talk in brief about the structure of the book, it has been arranged in a very concise concentrated way but thoughtfully and accurately in the form of phrases that are known as Aphorisms. The speciality of the book is that each section i.e. aphorism can be expressed separately but they are closely related to each other expressing the chain of thought.
Some of the sections are provided with footnotes which contain the explanation of the section to some extent and names of the author’s books i.e. references to support the statement.
