Hey readers, today we are going to give you the best shot of books for Human Physiology. There are multiple books available for physiology in the market. Physiology is an important subject for the first year. It is all about the basic functioning of the various systems of our body. It’s important because if we know how normal functioning of our body occurs then & then only, we can understand how abnormal body is functioning. So, its concepts act as a base to understand the other allied subjects such as pathology. CNS is the most difficult and lengthy chapter of physiology. So, pay special attention to it.
As in our 1st year, we have a more difficult subject than physiology i.e Anatomy. So it is generally seen among students that they gave more focus to anatomy and leave the physiology behind and study it at the last moments i.e. during exam times.

So from the very first-day focus on building strong concepts, because it will help you in exam times. Physiology is a relatively easy subject and it will not bother you much as anatomy. Even you have tutorials and seminars on YouTube, that will help you to revise the topics. Attend them properly and never skip them because these helps a lot to prepare your topic.
We have selected such books that help you in easy understanding and quick revision. Let’s get started, there are multiple books available for physiology and we don’t want to make you confused. So our recommendation is adjusted based on our experiences but trust us for student perspective they are the best book available in the market.
This is your exam savior book. Most students (including us) start studying from it during final exams to pass in exams. If you haven’t studied well during your whole year, then during exams, you can stick to this book. Our first recommendation for this book is due to K. Sembulingam is an Indian author, which itself is the best part of this book. You can easily understand what they meant to say it is really the simplest book. Its language is very simple and the content is very less. if you are switching from another medium or something like Hindi medium to medical then go with it, it consists of the simplest English language. No Complex word!!, nothing messy just simply read out this book and understand the topic, and seriously after this book, you doesn’t have to see for any other book for examinations point of view only.
It significantly reduces the time to read the topics. Its flow charts are really awesome. We will recommend you to strongly follow this book for CNS. As CNS is a difficult portion, it has so many topics like pain pathway, cerebellum, thalamus, etc, which are beautifully explained in this book. But some topics are even missing in it and many things are concise here. So, overall it is a good reference book, it gives you enough amount of knowledge but yeah as Medicos say don’t rely on only one book you must have to pay attention to other books for increasing your knowledge
now moving towards alternative of Essentials Of Medical Physiology by K Sembulingam & Prema Sembulingam
One of the most favored books by the students for physiology. If you are finding a book as an alternative for sembulingam then this is going to be the best one and again an Indian author and this book is mainly focused on the students & their exam. It contains topics in a pointwise manner. So, it becomes very easy to grasp a topic and write an exam. Appropriate flow charts and tables are given wherever necessary. But, it feels difficulty in some topics to develop a good grip over concept. In many topics, you will just ratification (mug up) but you will not have a good understanding regarding the topic But overall, we must that it’s a nice book. Especially for University final exams and learning perspective.
Now moving towards the second alternative of Sembulingam
This book allows you to have in detailed understanding of the topic. You can build good concepts with it, you will not just ratify it, but you will also understand the concept. So, it is very helpful to score well in your class tests and university exams. because the topics here explained are in so detail that you can write a good answer in the exam. As I previously said that “No book is complete”, you have to refer to multiple books to gain knowledge. So use this book along with A.K. Jain. and Sembulingam
The Bible and Ultimate book for physiology is Guyton and Hall Textbook of Medical Physiology, trust us it’s the best book for physiology to the date it gives us an extreme amount of knowledge and but these books contain a lot of many things, which are not necessary for our examinations. Yeah, they are clinically more important but the main problem it’s too vast and very much detailed. So, it requires a lot more time to study it. the main feature is that concepts are explained here are in storytelling form. As you will never forget a story, so it becomes very easy to retain the concepts. Even the concepts are explained beautifully. So, you will enjoy reading it. You want to build a strong foundation and concepts, then go with this. It is good for concept building, but you can say that this book will become a burden to you because covering up everything about physiology. It is very much helpful if you are preparing for the PG entrance exam.
If Physiology is an Art
Guyton and hall is Picasso
So, it’s up to you whether you want to study it or not. But usually, we don’t get much time in 1st year to study it. As we know there is already a burden on medical students of other subjects. So our recommendation for this book is at lower priorities.
Now we are just adding a small book. Short and simple to the straightforward book i.e
A summary book, Basically, it is a review book, not like a textbook. it is helpful to read-only when you had studied other books and build good concept. But being a foreign author book and its language is really very hard for us. The information given in it is beyond the UG level. So, never study this book for exams. It is only helpful if you really want to strengthen your concepts. You will get many extra points that are not given in any other book. Consider this book for your PG entrance exam
That’s it, for the theory. Now moving ahead to the practical parts. Always give importance to practical subjects because they will definitely help you to improve your grade card and clinical knowledge.
A short and sweet book gives you everything about the practical parts. practicals are way more funnier while performing but as A.K. Jain is a short book it contains only a piece of information, so if you have poor lab support then we recommend you to go with C L. GHAI
As an alternative of A.K. Jain, a deep book gives you the complete deep knowledge of practical but simultaneous boring, but yes if you have prepared your topic from these books then mark our words you will not have any kind of viva fear because it covers all major question which an examiner can ask. So hard works always pay off. Now it’s up to you.
So winding up the topic if you want to buy minimum books then go with these two:
- Essentials Of Medical Physiology by K Sembulingam & Prema Sembulingam
- Manual of Practical Physiology by A.K. JAIN
